After receiving an acceptance letter from Marywood's Admissions office, all new art students must then submit a portfolio to be admitted into the Art Department. Portfolios may be submitted any time in the fall or spring however only incoming freshmen portfolios submitted before March 1 will be considered for an Art Talent Award (see below).
Portfolios must be in one of the following formats:
- Original artwork
- USB Flash Drive
- Compact Disc/CD/CDR (MAC compatible, and enclosed in plastic protective sleeve and a padded envelope to ensure its safe arrival.)
- Digital Portfolio (URL, Dropbox, etc)
Note: All digital image files must be in .jpg, .png, or .pdf file format. Include your name and contact information along with a typed document listing of each piece and include the artwork's title, date, medium, size, and concept. Use our Portfolio Submission Checklist.
Your portfolio should include 12 to 15 original works. You can include personal projects and anything you completed in high school art classes or private lessons.
Your portfolio should demonstrate artistic technique, style, conceptualization, and creativity. If possible, include works that represent your chosen medium or area of interest. If you'd like to major in photography, for example, try to include photographs in your portfolio. Please also include a recent sketchbook and/or artwork that specifically pertains to your chosen major and program of study at Marywood.
Include a variety of media, if possible:
- Drawings in pencil, ink, or charcoal
- Paintings in oil, acrylic, or watercolor
- 3D work in clay, wood, metal, fiber, collage, or foamcore
- Computer graphics
- Digital illustration
In addition to your portfolio, you must also submit a short essay (250-300 words) describing your goals and how they relate to your chosen major, why you want to be an artist, what your strengths and passions are, and why Marywood is right for you. Include a hardcopy of your essay with your portfolio.
Portfolios must be picked up no later than 21 days after submission. To have your CD or flash drive portfolio returned by mail, be sure to include a padded, stamped, self-addressed envelope with your submission.

Art Talent Award
If you would like to be considered for an Art Talent Award, your portfolio must be submitted to the Art Department by March 1. Portfolios received after March 1 have no guarantee that award monies will still be available.
Your portfolio must be left with the Art Department 7-14 days for evaluation. You will be notified by mail if you receive an award.
Art Talent Awards are only available to incoming freshman students and transfer students from another school's art program. Once you have registered for classes, you cannot receive an award.
