The Glass Bead Game

Herman Hesse

The novel is set in the future and located in the isolated province of Castalia, a world of academia that consists of theory, analysis, interpretation, and debate--all elements of "the game". Action, creativity, originality, and experiment, however, are not found here. The book is broken up into a novel, 13 poems, and 3 short stories, and is challenging if you have your mind in "analysis overdrive." It is an intellectual, spiritual, existential, and humorous all-in-one if read with an open mind.  Imagine the total of human perspectives and knowledge translated into symbols, and played like a symphony to translate meanings and explore conclusions! I found it compelling and perspective-shattering, in the best ways possible.
