The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Written as a series of letters from Charlie to his "friend," the reader, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one of my favorite coming-of-age stories. Charlie is the epitome of a wallflower, shy and awkward but also alert and observant, and his letters range from the hilarious to the devastating. He is open and honest as he chronicles his freshman year in high school. He talks of his friend's suicide, childhood memories, his favorite books, and everything else in between. As Charlie becomes an "active participant" he struggles with being himself and what others want him to be. With a little help from those around him, Charlie slowly begins to discover his true self and the potential he has yet to unlock.
