Health and Physical Education
The Health and Physical Education minor is for students interested in working with youth in physical activity settings outside of the public schools.
The minor includes courses required for the physical education/teacher education major, but does not lead to a teaching license.
The courses in this minor provide a foundation for effective teaching behaviors along with exposure to the content of physical education. This minor is available to all students outside the physical education/teacher education major.
Students in the physical education minor are exposed to fundamental teaching methods associated with physical activity along with a broad overview of health-related fitness, skill themes and movement concepts, and team sports. Students may also have the opportunity to work with individuals with exceptionalities.
The Department of Physical Education offers a 18-credit minor in Coaching designed to prepare students to assume coaching responsibilities with a sound theoretical and practical background. The minor provides students with a foundation of essential coaching skills;
the basic knowledge, understanding, and application of coaching philosophy and effective teaching techniques;
the basic principles of human anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, and exercise science and the practical application to coaching;
injury prevention, risk management, and the treatment of sport-related injuries;
theories and techniques necessary to plan, organize, and implement sport programs;
and a demonstration of motor skills and strategies involved in coaching specific sports.
