The Social Sciences Department at Marywood University is pleased to announce a free public lecture by Dr. Joel Best, Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of Delaware. Dr. Best is widely regarded as a leading scholar in the sociological study of social problems. He has published more than twenty books, including Threatened Children, Everyone’s a Winner: Life in a Congratulatory Culture, Damned Lies and Statistics, and The Stupidity Epidemic.
At their recent Annual Meeting in Denver (June 19-21) the Catholic Press Association announced the recipients of this year's Catholic Press Association Awards, and that the recipient of the First Place Award for Books on Gender Issues was She Who Imagines, by Laurie Cassidy and Maureen H. O'Connell, Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN. This volume includes an Introduction written by Dr. Cassidy and her co-editor, and 12 essays written by different authors. The collection includes the articles, "Picturing Suffering: The Moral Dilemmas in Gazing at Photographs of Human Anguish," by Dr. Laurie Cassidy, and "Being Immaculate: Images of Oppression and Emancipation," by Sr. Mary Ann Zimmer, both of Marywood's Religious Studies Department.
The citation for the award commends She Who Imagines and notes that "The theology of aesthetics takes many steps forward through this expansive work to open the reader's mind, break down barriers, and forge new avenues for women in the Church and in the world. The beauty of this volume lies in the wisdom of its women authors who together provide a life-affirming book that raises the standard of justice and dignity for all people."
Congratulations to Dr. Laurie Cassidy and to Sr. Mary Ann Zimmer for this recognition of their work!
