Robert “Bob” Ide ’88 Nets Great Satisfaction as a Marywood Volunteer

During his student years at Marywood, Bob Ide ’88 didn’t picture himself as the type of guy who would eventually become a prominent and involved alumnus.

As an undergraduate student, Bob was involved with TVM (Marywood’s television station), and he also did his own radio show on WVM-FM. He was also very involved with the Intramural Men’s Basketball team, forging lifelong friendships with many of his teammates. [Men’s basketball wasn’t a recognized team sport at Marywood until 1991, at the junior varsity level; in 1993, it officially became a varsity sport.]

After graduation, Bob focused on his career, beginning a journey which led him to various news stations in Northeastern Pennsylvania. During that time, he met his wife, Susan, and they started a family. Bob was invited to serve on the Alumni Association Board and decided it was a great opportunity to give back to Marywood.

He quickly became involved in various events, like Breakfast with Santa, the MAC baseball game, MAC Knoebels Day, as well as Reunion Weekend. Tying into his passion for sports, Bob has been integral to the recent excitement surrounding Alumni Basketball Day. He has worked together with former Men’s Basketball Coach Eric Grundman, Women’s Coach Tara Macciocco, Assistant Director of Athletics and Recreation Andrew Smith, and Director of Athletics and Recreation Dr. Mary Jo Gunning. He noted, “It’s a great way to get student athletes, alumni, coaches, and friends together.”

Alumni Basketball Day is just the start of a new initiative to honor former team players. Soccer Alumni Day is already being planned, and reunions for other popular sports are soon to follow.

Now the President-Elect of the Marywood Alumni Association, Bob would love to see his fellow alumni take part in events, especially those who, like him, never imagined volunteering for the University.

“Even if it’s for just one event a year, and even if they can only take registrations for an hour or two, we would love to have our alumni back on campus.”
