Active learning with technology: bringing students, faculty, and information together
You will be joining a community of people devoted to creating and sharing information -- activities that can be enhanced by information technology. Finding answers to the following questions can help you understand how technology is used to support learning and collaboration in your areas of interest or possible major(s).
How does the campus use technology to enhance teaching, learning, and access to information in your areas of interest?
Many faculty members use Moodle, an online course management system, to provide online course materials, including PowerPoint presentations, discussion forums, quizzes and tests, and other online resources.
Is there technology in the classrooms?
Many classrooms across campus are designated "technology classrooms." These rooms are equipped with projectors, computers, laptop hookups, Smart Boards, and cameras.
Will you use technology to collaborate with other students in both your introductory and advanced courses?
Marywood promotes collaborative learning at all course levels through tools like Moodle, Google tools, Microsoft Office, computer-assisted design (CAD) software, and Smart Sympodium.
Does the school give credit for courses taken online from other institutions and sources of instruction?
Yes, Marywood allows students to receive credit for these courses as long as they satisfy the University's general requirements for transfer of credits.
Does the school have multimedia labs you can use to work on projects? Is there help available?
There are several computer labs equipped with a variety of software for student use. Computer labs are available on a drop-in basis whenever they are not reserved for classes.
Software applications include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access), Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, inDesign), Visual Studio, Foodworks, GeriMenu, Inspiration, Kurzweil 3000, and CAD. All labs are equipped with laser printers and scanners. There are also several specialized labs with video editing tools, as well as audio labs equipped with MIDI devices and mixing software.
Most labs are staffed by student aids trained to assist you. Some labs have professionals nearby to help you.
Are library collections and resources (such as catalogs, research databases, special collections, course reserves, full-text electronic journals, books, and streaming media) available online and accessible off-campus?
Most library resources, with some exceptions, are available online. Most can be used both on- and off-campus, while others are restricted to on-campus use only. Our library uses an electronic catalog, available to students 24/7 through the library's website.
What technology resources and help are available to students with special needs?
The Office of Student Support Services provides individualized support to students with disabilities. Assistive technologies are available in many of our computer labs. Most contain Jaws and Kuzwiel software, as well as tables that adjust for wheelchair use. For a full list of technologies, visit our Student Support Services website.
Can the library deliver documents to you electronically, either via e-mail, file transfer, or through web posting? Is there a cost associated with that service?
Members of the Marywood community can use our library website to access electronic databases and make interlibrary loan requests. Many of these databases provide full-text articles. Some interlibrary loan requests are fulfilled with PDF files delivered by e-mail. In general, there are no fees charged to registered students for any of these resources.
What kind of help does the library provide for research assistance, and when is the help available?
Students can chat with a librarian online 24/7. For in-depth research, students can speak with a librarian or make an appointment during library hours. A research librarian is on call whenever the library is open.
Does the campus offer general or profession-specific training programs that will ensure you are fluent in current information technologies when you graduate?
User Support Services provides support and training in a variety of computer tasks, including word processing, desktop publishing, data analysis, and database management. Training facilities are located on the third floor of the library. Our Technology Help Desk is on the main floor.
Many academic programs include courses in the use of technologies appropriate to their disciplines.
