The Design your Future program at Marywood University was established six years ago to offer high school students a significant first experience in architectural education. The program offers students an opportunity to participate in the process of design and to develop the basic tools of imagination and expression. It emphasizes that architecture and interior architecture combine the practical concerns of building with the artistic freedom of design.

The studio integrates hand techniques to extend and reinforce the lessons of conceptual design exercises. Abstraction and synthesis exposes students to the unique blend of visual orientation, creative process, academic investigation and professional training that forms an architectural education. Students explore the ideas, methods, and issues of architecture and interior architecture with professors and local practicing professionals. The introduction of architecture at a curricular level prior to college enhances the understanding of the profession and educates the young public about what architects do and how they do it.

Design your Future is a two-week immersion program for high school students looking to expand their knowledge about interior architecture and architecture through design. Marywood University offers the two-week program Monday-Friday, from 10am-4pm, including lectures, reviews, workshops, field trips, and studio projects. Additionally, a computer workshop covers Photoshop and other computer programs used in design. All classes are taught in the award-winning LEED Certified Center for Architectural Studies, where each student has their own studio work-space. Students also have the opportunity to earn three college credits through the Momentum Program.

The course is taught by Professor Kate O'Connor and Professor Stephen Garrison, both Full-time faculty from the Marywood School of Architecture. There are also two teaching assistants who serve as Resident Assistants in the dormitories. This creates an intimate student-to-teacher ratio, a quality that Marywood prides itself on. Furthermore, there is a very social component to the program that includes games, scavenger hunts, a RailRiders baseball game, and a day trip to Camelbeach Waterpark! All students live on-campus and enjoy a total university experience.
