Marywood University Men's and Women's Basketball teams will shoot for the goal: Stop Malaria
Teams Raising Awareness, Funds to Fight Malaria
The Marywood men’s and women’s basketball teams will hold a "Nets for Nets" event to raise awareness about malaria’s toll on communities in the developing world and to support malaria prevention and treatment programs run by Catholic Relief Services (CRS) overseas.
According to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, nearly 1 million people die from malaria each year, most of them children in Africa. Malaria is particularly debilitating to poor, rural communities in Africa where access to health care and prevention techniques such as insecticide-treated bed nets is limited. CRS and its partners have implemented malaria prevention and treatment activities with support from the Global Fund in several countries including The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Niger, Philippines, Benin, Senegal, Bolivia and Democratic Republic of the Congo.
