Archbishop Tobin Encourages Graduates to Guide Choices with Love

His Grace, The Most Reverend Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R, Archbishop of Indianapolis, was the keynote speaker at Marywood University’s 95th Commencement on Sunday, May 12, 2013, at the Mohegan Sun Arena, Wilkes-Barre, PA. He was awarded an honorary doctorate during the ceremony. Archbishop Tobin, a Redemptorist, noted that his order and the IHM Congregation “share a similar spiritual DNA” in their Alphonsian spirituality. Comparing life to a journey, he said the graduates had a choice to travel as tourists or pilgrims—tourists, with cursory, superficial connections to events and people around them, or pilgrims, with a deep connection to God and a commitment to the common good. He urged them to make choices guided by love. “Even when the pilgrimage takes you far from this place, the spirit you breathed at Marywood University will guide the choices you make,” noted Archbishop Tobin. “The Spanish mystic, Juan de la Cruz, reminds us that in the evening of our life, we shall be judged on love. It behooves us, I think, not to carry excessive baggage. At the end of the pilgrimage, all that we really will need is love: to love God as God deserves to be loved and to love our fellow travelers as sisters and brothers.”
