New Dean Takes College of Health and Human Services Global

For Mark E. Rodgers, DSW, becoming the new dean of the College of Health and Human Services seemed like a natural fit. Dr. Rodgers—a Philadelphia native—has spent his career traveling to countries such as Latvia, Bangladesh, Ecuador and South Africa, educating and training professionals to combat human trafficking and other international social problems.

"The university has a clear stance about being a positive force in the world," Dr. Rodgers said. "It would be great to put Marywood in the forefront of these issues in Northeastern Pennsylvania."

Dr. Rodgers has more than 28 years of social work practice and administrative experience in higher education. From 2004 – 2011 he was the Dean of the Graduate School of Social Work at Dominican University in Illinois. Prior to Dominican, he served for 21 years as the Department Chairperson and founding Director of the MSW Program at Monmouth University in New Jersey.

The College of Health and Human Services—which includes Health and Physical Education, Nursing, Nutrition and Dietetics, Physician Assistant Studies, Social Work, Public Administration, and houses the Human Physiology Laboratory—is, Dr. Rodgers notes, a place where students can "participate in service-learning trips, study abroad, become involved in athletics, attend or participate in the various cultural events on campus, as well as to collaborate with faculty on research projects."

Along with his responsibilities at Marywood, Dr. Rodgers serves on several editorial boards, reviews articles for the online Journal of Global Social Work Practice and is the current Chair of the Council on Social Work Education's Global Commission. In 2004, Dr. Rodgers was recognized for his work in Latvia by receiving the Latvian National Government, Ministry of Education and Science Award. Two years later, Dr. Rodgers was named the Social Worker of the Year by the National Association of the Social Worker Illinois Three Rivers Chapter as recognition of his leadership in international social work.

Dr. Rodgers received his BA in Social Work from Eastern University and his MSW and DSW from the University of Pennsylvania.
