Marywood Celebrates Veteran’s Day with Field of Flags

Marywood's Office of Military and Veteran Services and Student Veteran Alliance will lead activities to honor those who have served or are currently serving our country on Monday, November 11, at 10:45 a.m. in the Memorial Commons.

Marywood cadets from the University of Scranton Royal Warrior Battalion will provide the color guard, and five Marywood trumpeters will play "Echo Taps" surrounding more than 6700 flags representing fallen troops from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The event is free and open to the public. The field of flags, now on display, will remain up until Tuesday, November 12.

In addition to the Veteran's Day ceremony, a wall of remembrance will be displayed in the Liberal Arts Center Rotunda. The wall of remembrance was constructed by junior interior architecture students under the direction of Maria MacDonald, program director. The memorial is meant to be interactive, allowing students, faculty, staff, and members of the community to write messages of thanks and to display pictures of loved ones who have served or are currently serving our country.

"A lot of students probably know someone who has served or will be serving," said Lauren Williams, director of the Office of Military and Veteran Services. "We want the Marywood community and the public to give pause and feel an intimate connection with those service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice."
