Marywood Holds Veterans Day Events

During Veterans Day weekend, the Marywood community will stage a series of events to honor service members and commemorate the occasion.

On Sunday, November 11, Campus Ministry will hold a Veterans Day Mass at 7:30 p.m., in the Marion Chapel, Swartz Center.

On Monday, November 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., in the Fireplace Lounge, Nazareth Student Center, the Office of Military and Veteran Services will host a Veterans Day roll call, paying tribute to service members who have fallen during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation New Dawn.

A list of 6600 names of fallen men and women service members will be read aloud throughout the day, and the university will participate in a nationwide "moment of silence" at 2 p.m.

The Marywood University Trumpet Ensemble will play "Taps" at 10:55, in various locations on campus.

Lauren Williams, director of the Office of Military and Veteran Services, says that it is important for community members—military and civilians alike—to mark Veterans Day, remembering all the service members who have fallen in combat.

"A lot of students probably know someone who have served or will be serving," she said. "We want the Marywood community and the public to give pause and feel an intimate connection with those service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice."

More than 70 active military, veterans, and family members attend Marywood University. The institution was recently recognized in the "2013 Military Friendly Schools" list—a list that honors the top fifteen percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools in the country for doing the most to embrace America's military service members, veterans, and spouses as students, ensuring their success on campus.
