Student Ilze Spilde Named Fulbright Finalist

Ilze Spilde was recently named a "Fulbright Finalist" for her work in English language education. Ms. Spilde applied for a Fulbright grant earlier this year to teach English in Latvia from September 2013 to June 2014.

"When I received the notification telling me of my finalist status, I was very excited, but, at the same time, I continually reminded myself that this was only the next stage, not the actual offer of the grant," Ms. Spilde said, when asked about how she reacted to hearing the news. "I feel as though being Latvian is a large part of who I am, and the Fulbright program will allow me to really enrich myself and those I meet abroad."

If she were awarded a Fulbright grant, Ms. Spilde says she would most likely teach at the university level. In addition to teaching, she would work at a cultural center called the American Corner to better explain the culture, current events, and history of the United States to Latvian citizens.

Ms. Spilde will be notified later this spring if she has received the grant and the title of "Fulbright Scholar 2013 - 2014."
