Health and Physical Education Majors Shine at National Level

By Meaghan Thomas

While it is only Dr. Nelson Neal's first year with Marywood University's Department of Health and Physical Education, he quickly observed the talent, dedication, and achievements of his students.

Three students from the Department of Health and Physical Education were recently recognized on a national level for their successes in academia and their dedication to service projects. Nelson Neal, Ph.D., associate professor and the newest addition to Marywood's Department of Health and Physical Education, nominated Brad Rusnock, Physical Secondary Education major; Emily Fila, Athletic Training major; and John Volpe, Physical Activity major, for the Outstanding Student Major award given by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE).

NASPE is one of the five associations within the national, professional organization, The American Alliance for Health, Physical, Education, Recreation, and Dance, whose mission is to promote and support leadership, research, education, and best practices in the professions that support creative, healthy, and active lifestyles. Rusnock, Fila, and Volpe met the requirements for the Outstanding Student Major award, which include a GPA above a 3.0, participation in at least three service projects, and a major in the Department of Health and Physical Education. The students were recognized on March 15, in Boston, MA, among 166 Health and Physical Education majors across the United States.

The American Alliance for Health, Physical, Education, Recreation, and Dance includes statewide organizations, which also honor students with the Outstanding Student Major award.

"I am working on involving students on the annual statewide level, so they are both eligible for the Eastern district, which includes Pennsylvania, as well as the national level," explains Dr. Nelson Neal.
