Vonette Muir-Casteblanco, Gouldsboro, PA, is a junior nursing student at Marywood. Originally from South America, she traveled to Brooklyn, New York, after graduating from nursing school. She lived in Brooklyn, NY, for 28 years before moving to Gouldsboro, PA, nearly 12 years ago.

Vonette did not come here alone. The mother of two boys, her oldest son is a 22-year old graphic design major at Marywood, and her youngest is currently in seventh grade at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic School.

She was drawn to Marywood because of her deep Catholic faith. When looking for Catholic universities in the area, Vonette discovered Marywood, became interested in its pre-PA program, and transferred to the university with a 4.0 GPAMarywood's core values are at the heart of her student experience, and Vonette is grateful for how willing and helpful her professors are, keeping her on track with classes and college life in general. With their help, she has become more confident in her studies and empowered to move forward in her life, qualities that she feels are unique to a Marywood education.

Vonette is as a nursing assistant at St. Mary’s Villa, where she has worked since her arrival in Northeast Pennsylvania. More recently, she has volunteered to administer Covid-19 vaccinations and has given more than 500 shots. She is a person who loves volunteering her time to help others in need. Her advice to students is to always ask your professors questions when you need help. Vonette stated, “For nursing students in particular, listening is essential, whether it is listening to your professors or your patients.”
