Library Services

User Services Assistant


  • 35 hours per week; 48 weeks per year
  • 1pm-9pm Monday-Friday (ability to be flexible to cover late evening and/or weekend hours if needed)
  • 60 minute lunch period

Summary of Duties

The User Services Assistant is responsible for performing public service functions for the library.  The person in this position is usually the first point of contact for patrons and must exhibit excellent customer service while serving patrons from diverse backgrounds.  This position involves a variety of circulation duties including retrieving and storing library materials, and auditing the library collection.  The person in this position assists the Library Circulation Manager in covering staffing for the Learning Commons front desk, and provides software backup support for the library's online management system.



High school diploma required; Associate or bachelor's degree preferred

Work Experience Requirements

Customer service experience and experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace required; exposure to an automated library environment and experience with public services preferred.

Essential Elements

  • Assists faculty, staff, students and community in the use of the library and location of library materials using the library's online management system and the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) software. Provides assistance with online databases, reserve material, interlibrary loan, online study room reservations, MarywoodYou, printing, and other library public services as assigned
  • Safely and successfully operates the ASRS
  • Triages patron requests to other library personnel when appropriate, including taking messages and transferring phone calls
  • Completes routine library circulation tasks including the checking in and out of library material, maintenance of Marketplace titles, newspapers, and serials
  • Informs patrons of overdue materials and inquiries
  • Calls security or consults with appropriate library personnel about unusual situations in the Learning Commons
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Physical Demands

  • Sitting/standing for long periods of time
  • Mobility to and from desk/phone/computer and ASRS
  • Ability to push/pull weighted book carts
  • Bending and stretching to access book bins
