Laboratory Instructor in Chemistry

Summary of Duties

The Department of Science, Mathematics, and Computer Science at Marywood University seeks an undergraduate Laboratory Instructor in Chemistry for either an annual renewable position, or an Assistant Professor of Practice beginning in August 2022.

The Department of Science, Mathematics and Computer Science offers Bachelor’s degrees in Biology, Biology Pre-Professional, Biotechnology, Environmental Science, Pre-Physician Assistant, Medical Laboratory Science, Mathematics, Computer Science and Information Security as well as Biology/Math Secondary Education. It also offers a non-thesis Master’s degree in Biotechnology.

Requirements

Educational

M.S. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field, with evidence of excellent laboratory instruction is required. 

Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field with evidence of excellence in laboratory instruction is preferred.

Work Experience Requirements

Applicants should present evidence of experience in preparation and teaching of undergraduate General Chemistry and/or Organic Chemistry labs.

Preference will be given to candidates who have experience teaching both Science majors and non-Science majors, such as Nursing and other health professionals. In addition, teaching experience in other Science labs, such as Principles of Chemistry for Nursing students, is preferred.

Essential Elements

The primary responsibility is to teach Chemistry lab courses at the undergraduate level. The successful applicant will be responsible for scheduling and leadership of adjunct chemistry lab instructors as well as the conduct of labs. The successful candidate will be a leader in Chemistry laboratory execution, ensure the consistent conduct of all sections of laboratory courses, and develop rigorous rubrics for laboratory courses to be consistent among instructors. This position will work closely with the Chemistry faculty in the department to ensure academic rigor and consistency in content of the labs as well as with the department Laboratory Manager for coordination of supply and equipment needs. This position will be expected to attend department faculty meetings and engage in service to the department and to the University. This position is expected to teach laboratories during the summer sessions as well as the standard academic year. The position is required to teach 24 credit hours per academic year. Summer assignments will be considered a course overload.
