When you choose to major in one of the programs in the English and Modern Languages department, your options are guided by your aspirations. Our programs, including Spanish, Writing, and English, are intentionally diverse and comprehensive. Learn and practice your craft through Marywood’s vast array of media outlets, along with ongoing advocacy initiatives, study abroad options, a multitude of writing opportunities, and other meaningful avenues to express yourself and to listen to others. Discovering your passion and realizing your purpose as a strong communicator begins on Day One and continues throughout your time at Marywood.

The English Program at Marywood University is a dynamic learning community dedicated to exploring the beauty and power of language and literature. We offer a broad spectrum of courses for literary study and teacher training.
Foreign Language Program
The world is full of languages. It's your first step toward a wide world of career options. Exposure to different cultures and diverse people helps prepare you for study and travel abroad and local and international internships. Every student at Marywood is required to study a modern language as part of the University's core liberal arts curriculum. There are numerous opportunities for students to study abroad in countries throughout Europe and Latin America.

Many students erroneously believe that if they are placed in a level beyond 101, it is a death sentence. Some insist that they cannot do the work because they " have forgotten everything" or simply had "a bad teacher in high school". Here at Marywood, you will be placed with other students with similar backgrounds and learning experience. You will be expected to learn what you are taught. If you can speak and understand everything the first day, you will be advanced to the next level. Learning a foreign language is a practical, but exciting journey that will yield many opportunities over your lifetime.
