Home and School Visitor Certification
Post MSW-HSV
Requires a Master of Social Work Degree (MSW) from a CSWE-accredited School of Social Work. All Home and School Visitor post-MSW candidates complete a minimum of 360 hours in a school-based field placement which can be the applicants current position as a School Social worker, Crisis Counselor, Emergency HSV etc.,
A mentor who is a Certified Home and School Visitor completes a role competency evaluation of the candidates demonstrated skills. Post-MSW students who completed an Internship in during their MSW experience within the past 5 years can be given credit for the placement if it was under a School Social Worker/HSV and the candidate completes a portfolio demonstrating the HSV Role Competencies.
All Candidates will complete a plan based on the PDE Role and HSV competencies. Candidates will complete this plan delineating how they will demonstrate each of the competencies.
All candidates develop during SW 581 ( HSV Field Experience) a portfolio demonstrating their work i.e a group curriculum, in-service presentation, letters used for families, projects etc. Each applicant should develop a new project or service for their schools or IU to be completed during the semester. Please note: Candidates who have been given credit for a School based placement during their MSW Education will also develop a Portfolio demonstrating the Competencies.
An onsite visit is arranged once the plan is received to review it with the candidate and the Field Instructor. The portfolio will be reviewed at the end of the practicum during the evaluation visit.
In addition PDE requires all post MSW/Home and School Visitor candidates to have passed the PA Social Work License exam and hold a valid PA Social Work License (LSW or LCSW) at the time they apply for certification to PDE.
HSV Only
All Home and School Visitor ONLY candidates complete a minimum of 440 hours in a school-based field placement, supervised by a Certified Home and School Visitor who completes a role competency evaluation of the candidates demonstrated skills. This requirement is met by completion of SW 591 Field I and SW 592 Field II. All Candidates will complete a plan based on the PDE Role and HSV competencies. Candidates will complete this plan delineating how they will demonstrate each of the competencies.

This requirement can be met by a 1st year (440 hr) Placement or 2nd year (480 hr) Placement.
All Candidates will complete a plan based on the PDE Role and HSV competencies. Candidates will complete this plan delineating how they will demonstrate each of the competencies.
