*As of Spring 2024, there is no Language Placement Exam*
Incoming Students
All incoming and transfer students who enroll on or after July 1, 2024, are required under the newly revised Core Curriculum, to complete a 3-credit Core LANG course (FR, ITAL, or SPAN 150/250 or 270) no later than their second year. New students must enroll in one of the new Core LANG courses listed above, and are not eligible to enroll in existing Core LANG courses.
For AY 24-25: A limited number of new Core LANG sections may be offered beginning Spring 2025, for new transfer students (enrolling July 1, 2024 or after) and/or Spanish major or minor students. In general, all other incoming students should be advised to plan for LANG in their second year, beginning Fall 2025 when the new LANG courses will be regularly offered.
Language course level placement is determined by a student’s number of years of prior language study. No placement exams are required or will be administered. On or after July 1, 2024 all incoming and transfer students will be assigned a Language placement as follows:
The Director of Admissions will provide the Modern Languages Coordinator, Dr. Ann Cerminaro-Costanzi, with a list of incoming and transfer students and the number of years the student has studied a language previously in high school.
The Modern Languages Coordinator will assign a placement, according to the student's highest level of language studied and/or LANG credit transferred.
The Modern Languages Coordinator will input the student's placement in the NOTES sections of the student's portal where student advisors can view it and then make sure the student enrolls in the appropriate level course according to the placement provided.
Language placements may not be changed without the approval of the Modern Languages Coordinator.
Current Students
Current students, enrolled on or before June 30, 2024 are subject to the existing Core requirements and are required to take 3-6 credits of an existing LANG course. Current students must enroll in existing Core LANG courses and may not enroll in new Core LANG courses.
Language course level placement for current students will also be determined by the student’s number of years of language study prior to enrolling at Marywood. No placement exams are required or will be administered.
Current students who are still in need of or do not know their Language placement should:
Email the Modern Languages Coordinator, Dr. Ann Cerminaro-Costanzi at: acostanzi@maryu.marywood.edu, and provide the language and number of years they have studied previously.
The Modern Languages Coordinator will assign a placement, according to the student’s highest level of a modern language studied.
The Modern Languages Coordinator will notify the student, the registrar, and the student’s advisor.
The registrar or the student’s advisor will record the student’s Language placement in their portal.
