Marywood University Welcomes New Board for UPSIDE Initiative

Marywood University has introduced a new student-led board for the Underrepresented Psychology Student Inclusion and Empowerment (UPSIDE) initiative, a program designed to support and elevate psychology students from underrepresented groups. As a student-faculty organization, UPSIDE aims to foster inclusive success within Marywood’s psychology community. The UPSIDE board members bring a passionate dedication to supporting diversity and inclusion in psychology, with each member sharing unique insights into their commitment to the organization.

UPSIDE President La’Bri Williams describes her journey with the organization as coming full circle. “UPSIDE is the reason I came to Marywood University in the first place,” Williams explains. Through a connection between UPSIDE and her alma mater, Grambling State University, Williams found herself inspired to join a group that empowers underrepresented psychology students. “I am so grateful to be part of a community that centers on inclusion, development, and empowerment,” she says, reflecting on UPSIDE’s outreach efforts and its focus on diversity within psychology.

For UPSIDE Vice President Colette McDonnell, involvement in UPSIDE represents an essential step toward becoming an effective advocate and therapist for underrepresented groups. “Advocating for and understanding the experiences of underrepresented groups is essential,” McDonnell shares, adding that UPSIDE allows her to grow in ways that deepen her potential as a psychologist. “UPSIDE fosters growth and empowerment, which are critical elements for any psychologist,” she adds.

Christine McLaughlin, UPSIDE’s Secretary, appreciates the organization’s role in both professional and personal growth. “I love connecting with fellow students and expanding my understanding of how best to advocate for minority groups,” McLaughlin explains. With a goal of helping her future clients, she notes that UPSIDE offers invaluable opportunities for education, awareness, and connection within the psychology field.

Finally, Megan Boyd, UPSIDE Treasurer, sees her involvement as a responsibility to advocate and educate. “As psychology students, we have a responsibility to help underrepresented groups,” Boyd emphasizes. She feels that UPSIDE allows students not only to advance their skills but also to make a tangible impact on the field’s diversity and inclusivity. “UPSIDE provides us with the chance to learn and grow as clinicians, while helping to improve our field for the better,” Boyd notes.

As UPSIDE’s new board looks ahead, each member’s vision emphasizes the shared commitment to creating a more inclusive and empowered community for psychology students at Marywood University. Their insights highlight UPSIDE’s essential role in fostering an environment where all students are equipped to serve with understanding, advocacy, and inclusion.
