Marywood Assistant Professor Participates in Prestigious Book Launch Event
Ryan Scavnicky, Assistant Professor of Practice in Marywood University's School of Architecture, recently took part in the launch of Rome – Las Vegas: Bread and Circuses, a groundbreaking book by internationally renowned photographer Iwan Baan. Held on November 22, 2024, at the Head Hi bookstore in Brooklyn, NY, the event featured a lively discussion and book signing with Scavnicky, Baan, Pippo Ciorra (Senior Curator at Rome's MAXXI museum), and Lane Rick (architect and professor at Kean University).
Scavnicky authored the eponymous essay featured in the book, which serves as its main text. His critical exploration delves into the shared themes of power and spectacle that link the ancient grandeur of Rome with the modern extravagance of Las Vegas. “It was an honor to contribute to such an inspiring project, especially one that challenges perceptions and draws new connections between these two iconic cities,” Scavnicky remarked.
The book, published by Lars Müller, contrasts Baan’s evocative photography of both cities with Scavnicky’s incisive writing. Released 50 years after the seminal Learning from Las Vegas by Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, Rome – Las Vegas: Bread and Circuses revisits the dialogue on architecture, spectacle, and symbolism through a contemporary lens.
Scavnicky’s participation in this high-profile event underscores his standing as both a thought leader and an educator. In addition to his academic contributions at Marywood University, Scavnicky brings a wealth of international experience from his studies and professional roles in Paris, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, and beyond.
Marywood University celebrates Scavnicky’s achievements, which reflect the institution’s commitment to fostering faculty who engage with global conversations in their fields while inspiring students to think critically and creatively.
