From student to entrepreneur, how this Pacer is already making his mark
When Joel DeCarli ’24 first chose Marywood University, it was for its standout aviation program. But as his career goals evolved, so did his academic path—leading him to graduate with a degree in Business Management. “Marywood was appealing to me because of the location and small class sizes,” Joel shared. “It offered a personalized education that helped me grow in more ways than one.”
Throughout his time at Marywood, one mentor stood out the most: Professor Chris Speicher. “He had a huge influence on my academic and professional development,” Joel said. “He encouraged me to think creatively and act with confidence—skills I’ve carried into all areas of my career.”
Since graduating, Joel has excelled in not one but three professional roles, balancing a fast-paced schedule with passion and purpose. As a Project Engineer at Sordoni Construction, Joel plays a critical role in a major healthcare initiative. “Working on the Geisinger Cancer Center project has been incredibly rewarding. We’re helping bring vital healthcare resources to Lackawanna County.”
As a Realtor at Cobblestone Real Estate, Joel finds joy in helping others achieve a huge milestone: homeownership. “Guiding clients through the home buying process and seeing them find their dream homes is a special part of what I do.”
Joel is also the proud founder of Apex Creations, a startup he began during his time at Marywood. He completed Lackawanna County's TechCelerator program, which supports local entrepreneurs as they develop and launch business ideas. “It was empowering to collaborate with like-minded innovators and bring my own ideas to life.”
Joel credits his business management degree for giving him a solid foundation in finance, leadership, and strategic planning. “It’s helped me manage construction projects, evaluate real estate investments, and build my own business. Marywood gave me the tools I needed to succeed in multiple fields.”
Outside the classroom, Joel immersed himself in student life, taking part in groups like BOLD (Business Opportunities for Leadership Development), Accounting and Finance Club, Aviation Club, Student Alumni Association (SAA), and the TechBridge Business Plan Competition.
Joel is currently developing his third prototype for a product he started as a Marywood student. He’s actively working with an engineer and patent attorney to bring his vision to life. “It’s exciting to be building something from scratch that could one day impact people’s lives.”
His advice to current students? “Take every opportunity to gain real-world experience—internships, side projects, networking. Focus on developing practical skills beyond the classroom, connect with mentors, and don’t be afraid to explore new paths.”
With ambition, innovation, and a passion for growth, Joel DeCarli is a proud Marywood alumnus making his mark across several industries—and just getting started.
