Rachel Hartz
Rachel Hartz’s journey with Marywood University began in a way familiar to many prospective students—navigating financial obstacles and career choices. Originally from Factoryville, Pennsylvania, Hartz first connected with Marywood while exploring options for her MBA. Initially deterred by the cost, she followed a suggestion from a graduate admissions counselor to apply for a graduate assistantship. In a stroke of luck and determination, she was awarded a full assistantship the very next morning and joined the Admissions Office as a graduate assistant. From her first day in the office, Hartz’s enthusiasm, work ethic, and drive to support others stood out, setting her on a path that would shape both her career and the lives of countless students.
Over the years, Hartz has climbed the ranks within Marywood’s Admissions Office through her unwavering dedication, steadily advancing from her initial assistantship role to Associate Vice President for Admissions. Every step in her journey is a testament to her commitment to Marywood’s mission and to her belief in the transformative power of education. Hartz’s current role, where she oversees recruitment for both undergraduate and graduate students, is the result of years of diligent work, relationship building, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Day-to-day, Hartz’s role involves a blend of strategic planning, data analysis, and team supervision.
“We’re always looking at what went well and what we want to replicate from the past year,” Hartz explains. “I’m constantly pulling reports, comparing our current numbers to past years, and making adjustments as we go. It’s about tracking our progress and adapting our approach to meet both team and individual goals.”
In addition to overseeing recruitment events and traveling to represent Marywood, Hartz focuses on ensuring each team member is set up for success. Her commitment to adaptability and data-driven strategies has become central to Marywood’s admissions efforts.
As a leader, she’s passionate about mentoring her team, especially young professionals embarking on their first full-time roles, helping them develop the skills and confidence to thrive. Hartz’s career progression is not only a personal achievement but also an inspiring story of how hard work and dedication can open doors.
“I’ve worked hard to get to where I am and couldn't have done it alone,” Hartz reflects. “Our team’s support, drive, and shared vision have been invaluable. Together, we’re constantly pushing each other to do better and create a welcoming environment that helps every student find their place at Marywood.”
Lisa Casella, Associate Director for Marketing Communications and one of Hartz’s long-time colleagues, shares her admiration.
“I’ve worked with Rachel since she began her career at Marywood,” Casella reflects. “We’ve been through many recruitment cycles together. In each admissions role Rachel has held, she has always been professional, problem-solving, results-driven, innovative, and a team player. I am glad to call Rachel my colleague, and more importantly, my friend.”
When asked what sets Marywood apart from other institutions, Hartz is passionate. Growing up, she admits she underestimated Marywood’s scope. Today, she believes the university’s unique culture and close-knit community make it stand out, along with its commitment to authenticity.
One of Hartz’s most memorable experiences exemplifies this commitment to service. She recounts a close relationship with a first-generation student and his family, which began with helping them navigate the admissions and financial aid processes and grew into a lasting bond. To this day, she receives holiday cards from the family and fondly remembers watching him evolve from a first-year student to a successful professional in his field.
“I prioritize being open and honest with prospective students about what Marywood is, focusing on connecting them with the right academic programs and a campus experience that meets their goals,” Hartz explains. “Helping students find their direction and feel at home here is what drives me every day.”
Outside of her role in admissions, Hartz’s life is filled with surprising hobbies and pastimes. She’s a dedicated sports fan, loyal to the Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Philadelphia Eagles, and she loves working out. Her adventurous spirit extends to past competitive figure skating and even hot air ballooning during her childhood as part of a hot air balloon crew. Hartz is also a lover of Caribbean vacations, particularly enjoying the tranquility of turquoise waters.
With a career devoted to helping students find their path, Hartz continues to embody the mission of Marywood University, not just through her professional achievements but through the genuine connections she fosters with students and families alike. Her story serves as an inspiring example of the impact one person can have on a student’s journey.
